The Drums w/ Craft Spells & Co.

May 14th, 2012 § Leave a Comment

Oh gosh! It’s been half a year now since I’ve last posted, so long that I hardly recognized my own blog when I first logged on.

Anyway, I had a totally great blogworthy day on Saturday so here goes! Welcome me back guys… thanks, I’m glad to be back.

It was 13 months ago when I first saw Craft Spells open for Beach Fossils at Slims. Also at that show was: Julia and Mani, whom I had yet to meet at the time. 13 months later, I get to watch Craft Spells perform again, this time opening for The Drums. But this time circumstances are different–Justin (singer of Craft Spells), Julia, and Mani are now some of my dearest and bestest(this isn’t even a word is it?) friends!! I had been been SOOO stoked for this show for both The Drums and Craft Spells. I got to hang out with all of my best friends at the same place while watching one of them put on a fan-fucking-tastic show. As if this wasn’t enough, THE DRUMS followed with an AMAZINGAMAZING performance.
One of the funnest nights I’ve had in a really long time.

I got a photo pass for the show, but taking band photos wasn’t my priority that night, so here’s something. I didn’t take any pictures of The Drums cause I was too busy enjoying myself.

Celebrating Carbs and Tryptophan

The way my life has been, I can’t help but have an aversion towards the holidays: one, I work at the mall (holiday hours and Black Friday chaos), two, it’s always around Finals time, and three, I just hate family gatherings. But the good part is, I love carbs (especially mashed potatoes w/ gravy!) and it’s not so bad when I don’t have to spend it with my own family! This was the second year I spent Thanksgiving over at my boyfriend’s house. And his family does it right. Plenty of good food, wine, and left overs (for Thanksgiving Burritos the next day!).

More photos here.

Warby Parker

I briefly introduced Warby Parker to you in a previous post, now let me tell you exactly why I’m SO in love with them.

I’ve only had my current pair for about a year and I’ve already got my next one picked out. Don’t get me wrong, I love my current glasses, But here’s the deal with WP:

1. They are incredibly cheap! Only $95 a pair FRAME & LENSES INCLUDED!!! Anyone who wears glasses knows how expensive they are. For those of you, like me, who have a really high prescription and need high index (extra thin lenses), it’s only an extra $30. That’s cheaper than Costco, y’all!

2. They’re awfully trendy and stylish. Glasses help define a lot of people’s identities, especially those who wear them all day, everyday. It’s on my face all day. I’d say it’s important that they look nice.

3. And last, they donate a pair to charity for every pair you buy. WHAT! Can’t say no to that.

SO it’s a WIN/WIN/WIN situation. They’re doing a good thing. Check them out!

Doin’ It Right: Sunday Funday Style

I went back to SF a couple days after my car was broken into so that I could really hang out with these kids (especially Justin) again, since our first meeting didn’t exactly go as planned. First order of business, BURGERS. I hadn’t had a burger in the longest time and was desperately craving one let alone tried a new place (probably since Portland!) so we went to Super Duper burger which some of my friends had been raving about.

So um... this was what's left of the burger.

I was told the Portobello Burger was the shit but for my first time, I wanted to get a burger. I always get as classic of a burger as possible in order to rate/compare it accordingly. I think you can tell from the photo that I loved it. By the time I even remembered about this whole burger rating thing I’ve been doing, I had almost nommed down the entire burger. I definitely regret getting the smaller burger option but I’ll know for next time!

So rating: 5/5

#1 Best Burger <$10!!

I got the “mini cheeseburger” which is 4oz patty that was only $5.

Then we went to pick out a new pair of Warby Parker glasses for me. They’re SUCH an amazing company. I just rant every time anyone asks me where I got my current glasses so I’ll do a separate post on them. After that, we stopped by a random coffee shop for some… coffee. It was a really big and nice coffee shop with lots of tables and seats!  I love being pleasantly surprised by spontaneous stops. I think there was a wine bar or something in the back of it too, for post studying perhaps?

Who doesn't belong: the boy, the white girl, or the 3rd wheel? (listed from left to right)

Noticed something different about Julia but couldn't figure it out? She cut her hair!

We decided to go to a bar, but couldn’t decide which one until we remembered that one featured free karaoke on Sundays. The decision was too obvious then. The result, this:

And a little shameless plugging, check out Justin’s band:

My friends, Julia, Justin, Mani, and I went to see Real Estate perform at Slims on 11/11/11. It was a pretty good show! I probably could’ve enjoyed the show a little more if I wasn’t so tired and hungry though! To make matters worse, my car got broken into during the show! Arghhh. All has been taken care of since then. Here’s what I got from the show though:

Their sophomore LP, Days, is worth checking out!

My friend, Vanessa, just got this gramophone/phonograph and I’m pretty really jealous.

Vi and I have been friends for over half of our lives now! She finally just turned 21 last week so I took her out to Yardhouse because they seriously have the best Happy Hour, 120 beers on tap and at least 10 different appetizers to choose from. We had a feast! Poor Vi got her ass kicked from her drink though lol.

Dreams Burn But In Ashes Are Gold

It’s been six long years since Kings of Convenience  have been to the Golden Coast (that’s California btw) and I’ve been a fan of theirs for five. So when they announced their show in San Francisco at The Fillmore, I jumped on that like Voldemort on a unicorn. Of course it sold out not too long after. To make up for our deprivation, they rewarded us with a full 2-hour long set, playing 3 extra songs after announcing their “last” song, then several more for the encore. They swept us away with their (almost entirely) acoustic set then made us dance with them like we’d rather not be talking. We were charmed off our feet by Erland øye’s impecable stage presence and Eirik Bøe’s smooth charisma. It was a truly unique performance, unlike any show I’ve ever been to, just one of those shows that just leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling inside ya know?? However, I didn’t appreciate that dumb merch guy’s sarcasm when I asked him where the KoC’s merch is and he replied, “Norway.” Ass.

Before the show, Steven and I went to the Speakeasy Brewery for their little beer event, but they hadn’t opened yet when we got there. So as we were  driving around, we found this really random park in the middle of this completely industrial area and hung out there for a little while.

There was actually more to the park, like a little playground and stuff.

Teeny Steven or humungous wheel?
